WHAT IS THE NATIONAL PLAN FOR POST SCHOOL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (NPPSE)

The National Plan for Post-School Education and Training (NPPSET) is a policy framework that guides the development of post-school education and training (PSET) in South Africa. It was launched in 2021 and is intended to guide the sector for the next 10 years.

The NPPSET aims to: Ensure that all South Africans have access to quality PSET opportunities.

Address the skills shortage in the country. Improve the quality of PSET. Make PSET more responsive to the needs of the economy.

Promote equity and social justice in PSET. The NPPSET is based on the following principles: Lifelong learning: The NPPSET recognizes that learning is a lifelong process and that people need access to PSET opportunities throughout their lives. Quality: The NPPSET is committed to ensuring that all PSET opportunities are of high quality. Relevance: The NPPSET aims to ensure that PSET is relevant to the needs of the economy and society. Equity: The NPPSET is committed to ensuring that all South Africans have access to PSET opportunities, regardless of their background. Social justice: The NPPSET aims to promote social justice in PSET by addressing the historical inequalities in the sector.

The NPPSET is a comprehensive and ambitious plan that aims to transform the PSET sector in South Africa. It is a key document in the country's efforts to build a skilled and capable workforce that can drive economic growth and development. Here are some of the key interventions that are being implemented under the NPPSET: The establishment of a new National Skills Authority (NSA) to coordinate and regulate the PSET sector.

The development of a new National Qualifications Framework (NQF) to ensure that all PSET qualifications are aligned to the needs of the economy. The expansion of access to PSET opportunities, particularly for historically disadvantaged groups. The improvement of the quality of PSET through the introduction of new curriculum standards and the strengthening of teacher training. The promotion of lifelong learning through the development of new distance learning and workplace learning opportunities.

The NPPSET is a work in progress, and it will be important to monitor its implementation and impact in order to ensure that it is achieving its objectives. However, it is a significant step forward in the development of PSET in South Africa, and it has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of many South Africans.
