IT STARTED WITH A PASSION……. THEN YOU BECAME THE BOSS!

A Personal Message to Our Clients, Past and Present

Think back to where it all started. Perhaps you had a passion, a brilliant idea or the determination to build something of your own. Perhaps you started as an employee, worked your way through the ranks, developed your expertise and aspired to become a manager, director or CEO. For some, it began with an entrepreneurial dream. For others, it was a career built through years of dedication, ambition and hard work. Different journeys, but a shared desire to achieve something meaningful. And somewhere along the way, you became the boss.

Nobody necessarily warned you that the position might also require you to become a financial expert, negotiator, debt collector, compliance officer, counsellor, occasional referee and, when all else fails, the person everyone expects to fix the office printer! Welcome to leadership in South Africa, where resilience is essential and “we’ll make a plan” is practically a national business strategy.

When All You’re Trying to Do Is Get the Job Done

Cash flow. Customers. Suppliers. Salaries. Budgets. Rising costs. Performance targets. Customers promise payment “now now”. Suppliers want; their money yesterday. Employees need to be paid on time, and SARS isn’t particularly interested in whether your biggest customer has settled; their account.

Then there are the responsibilities that come with the position. For directors, fiduciary duties, corporate governance, financial oversight and statutory obligations. For executives and managers, operational targets, budgets, performance expectations and the responsibility of delivering results. Add taxation, labour legislation, Employment Equity, workplace safety, POPIA and the various compliance requirements that accompany running or managing a business.

And then there are the people’s challenges. An employee hasn’t arrived for work. Two colleagues aren’t speaking. A manager needs guidance. A grievance lands on your desk. Someone mentions the CCMA, and suddenly everyone seems to have become a labour law expert overnight. Meanwhile, you still have your actual job to do!

But somehow, you find a way forward. When Plan A fails, there’s Plan B. By Friday, you’re probably on Plan F. Because problems don’t always have easy answers, but good leaders keep looking for solutions.

It’s Tough at the Top

One of the supposed advantages of being the boss is flexibility. You can manage your own time, make decisions and supposedly take leave whenever you want. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Until you discover that flexibility often means being available whenever something goes wrong!

Your phone seems to operate on a permanent 24/7 contract. Weekends aren’t necessarily weekends, and holidays don’t always feel like holidays. You can be enjoying a braai or sitting on a beach in Ballito when that familiar WhatsApp arrives: “Sorry to bother you while you’re away, but just a quick question…” We all know how that ends.

Beyond the long hours, however, is something people rarely discuss: the loneliness of leadership. Everyone needs answers from the boss, but the boss doesn’t always have someone to turn to. There are confidential concerns, difficult decisions and responsibilities that don’t disappear when you leave the office. It’s tough at the top — not because you must do everything, but because you often feel responsible for everything.

Being the Boss Is One Thing. Being a Leader Is Another.

Management is about planning, organising, maintaining standards and achieving results. Leadership is about building trust, inspiring confidence, developing people and guiding them through uncertainty. Both are essential. You can’t run a successful organisation on motivational speeches alone, but neither can you build one through policies, procedures and instructions.

A manager ensures the work gets done. A leader helps people understand why it matters. And let’s not forget that without employees, there is no successful business.

You may have the vision, take the risks and make the decisions, but your employees help turn those plans into reality. The quiet achievers, the problem-solvers and those who consistently go the extra mile deserve recognition and appreciation. Of course, respect and accountability work both ways. Good leaders need committed employees, and good employees deserve fair, supportive leadership. Successful organisations are built by people working together towards a shared purpose.

But Would We Have It Any Other Way?

After the financial pressures, compliance obligations, employee challenges and holidays that aren’t really holidays, you might wonder why anyone would choose this life. But here’s the thing. We did choose it. We worked towards it, accepted responsibility or took the chance. And most of us wouldn’t have it any other way. Because we love what we do.

We love the challenge, the satisfaction of finding solutions, achieving results, developing people and seeing something we’ve worked towards become a reality. And we love the people we meet along the way — the clients who become friends, the colleagues who become trusted confidants; and the professional partnerships that last for years.

Yes, there are days when we consider selling everything and moving to a little farm in the Karoo. But Monday morning, there we are again. Coffee in hand. Ready for the next challenge. We didn’t pursue this journey because we thought it would be easy. We pursued it because we believed it would be worthwhile. And despite the challenges, it is.

To Our Clients, Past and Present — We Appreciate You!

This Boss’s Day, we want to acknowledge the people who have made our own business journey possible. You. Our clients, past and present. We recognise that you have choices about the professionals you invite into your businesses and the people you trust with important decisions. The opportunity to work with you is a privilege, and one we never take lightly.

You’ve trusted us with complex challenges, welcomed different perspectives and given us opportunities to learn, grow and contribute to businesses you’ve worked incredibly hard to build. Along the way, there were successes, lessons, laughter and robust conversations. We’ve occasionally fallen short, sometimes exceeded expectations and certainly haven’t always agreed.

But meaningful professional relationships aren’t built on perfection. They’re built on honesty, accountability, mutual respect and the willingness to find solutions together. For us, cultural fit;  matters. We value relationships where people can speak openly, challenge one another constructively and remain committed to a common goal.

Our aim has always been simple: to leave your business better than we found it. Not merely to complete an assignment, but to add genuine value, offer sound advice, solve problems and make a positive difference.

Some relationships have lasted for years, others for a particular chapter. Some have developed into friendships, while others have taken us in different directions. Each has contributed something to our journey. And that is why we appreciate you. Not simply for the business you’ve given us, but for your trust, the opportunities, the lessons, the relationships and the privilege of doing what we love alongside you.

So, to every entrepreneur, business owner, director, CEO, executive and manager we’ve had the pleasure of working with — thank you. May your businesses flourish, your people thrive, your challenges lead to new opportunities and your holidays eventually become actual holidays!

And because it’s Boss’s Day, we’ll even let you believe you know absolutely everything. Just for today!

HAPPY BOSS’S DAY 2026!

Here’s to the passion that started it all, the people who make it possible and the relationships that make the journey worthwhile.
